Erykah Badu Denies Having Beef With Nicki Minaj

Just yesterday, I posted up a performance by Erykah Badu at the "Afro Punk 2012 Festival" held in Brooklyn this past weekend. And the reason why I posted up the footage was because during Erykah's performance she did her own rendition of Nicki Minaj's "Beez In The Trap".

Erykah's "Beez In The Trap" rendition started out with this line "Bitch you don't beez in no trap" which caused people (like me) to think that there might have been some issues between Erykah Badu and Nicki Minaj. However, this is not the case.

Erykah has heard what us folks were saying and has responded to the allegations that she doesn't get along with Nicki Minaj via her Twitter page. You can find out what Erykah Badu had to say when you click on that "Read More" button below:

So I guess I stand corrected then! You can carry on, or leave your thoughts about this in the comments section. You know I'm listening!

One Direction Announce Album Title ‘Take Me Home’

Not since Spice Girls zig-a-zig-ahhed out both Spice and Spice World within a matter of months in 1997 have we seen such a quick succession of album releases by a UK pop act in the US. But One Direction are set to follow that trend, as their sophomore effort will arrive in November, just eight months after their debut Up All Night hit US shores and topped the chart. (In the UK, Up All Night was released on November 18 last year.) And now, Directioners, 1D’s second album finally has a title, thanks to a tweet by member Louis Tomlinson.

“So pleased to tell you that our new album is called “take me home” can’t wait for you to hear it! More news soooon! #takemehome,” the boy bander tweeted yesterday. Last week One Direction announced that Take Me Home‘s lead single is called “Live While We’re Young”. Will you be taking home a copy of Take Me Home in November?

Alicia Keys Girl On Fire album cover

Alicia Keys is a vision of classic beauty on the just-revealed cover of her fifth album Girl On Fire (out November 27). The “New Day” singer strikes a glamorous hands-on-hips pose while wearing a black body suit/zippy dress-type number with her hair swept to one side.

I have arrived at a place in myself that I’m comfortable being exactly who I am in this moment and sharing it with no reservations.”

Alicia will give her first live performance of Girl On Fire‘s title track - which serves as the album’s first single - at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, September 6.

Wantful: Bringing the Art Back to Gift Giving

If you've ever been on the receiving end of a thoughtful present, you know that gift giving is an art form. And the proliferation of gift cards may just be the opposite of that. The minds behind new site Wantful are turning that notion on its head with a gift giving service that's totally original. The premise is simple: log on, give an explanation of your giftee (occasion, gender, age et al), describe their taste via image selection, provide your price range (anywhere from $30-500) and then choose from a range of carefully-curated gifts, from jewelry to gourmet foods. Your favorite 16 items will be designed into a personalized gift book, where you can write a note, design the cover and have it mailed to your lucky person. The receiver then uses a code to select one gift from the choices and it automatically ships to their home. They'll never know the price (like on those tacky cards mentioned above) and you'll forever be known as a gift giver of the artful variety.

Selena Gomez, one of our Hottest 30 Under 30, lived up to her title on Monday (August 20) when the pop star was spotted donning denim shorts, studded boots and a loose-fitting tank top as she exited the California Pizza Kitchen in Tarzana, CA after lunching with her girlfriends.

The pop star recently apologized to fans via Twitter for being offline lately, claiming it was due to her current shooting schedule. Justin Bieber‘s main squeeze has been spotted on set of While I’m Dead… Feed The Dog, the flick which recently caused the pop star to get bangs.

What do you think of Selena’s casual lunch look? Tell us below or on Facebook and Twitter.

Here’s the First Pic of Sarah Jessica Parker, Outfitted by Anna Wintour, as the Editor of Vogue.com on Glee

Photo: @MrRPMurphy

Earlier this month, Glee creator Ryan Murphy revealed that Sarah Jessica Parker would guest star on season four of the series playing the editor of Vogue.com–and that Anna Wintour would take care of the costumes. (Remember that Wintour’s daughter Bee Shaffer works for Murphy’s production company, so… family connections.)

And earlier today, Murphy tweeted the first photo of SJP on set as Isabelle, Kurt’s boss at Vogue.com (got to brand the digital side too!!). Looks like she’s wearing a Lanvin necklace, and who can ID the rest? we’ve figured the rest out!

Update: I’m pretty sure SJP’s dress is by up-and-coming label Faster Than Paris. The label, founded by Tracy L. Cox, a stylist who used to work for Patricia Field at SATC and Troy Arnold, who has worked for Peter Som and DKNY, is featured in the View section of Vogue‘s September issue. They’re photographed with Chanel Iman who we’re pretty sure is wearing this exact dress. Also, Parker is quoted in the story: “That wonderful Tartan shift dress is one of the greatest pieces I’ve seen in five years.” –Dhani

Update # 2: She’s also wearing a Delfina Delettrez detaille necklace as a bracelet.

Looks like AW’s doing a nice job as costume designer so far.

Menswear Staples to Steal From the Boys Now

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that menswear is having a moment. And it’s not just the boys who are benefiting. Now, more than, ever is the time for ladies to start stealing from men’s closets.

“I have to admit that I have always been a fan of women’s casual style–from over-sized t-shirts to worked-in Chuck Taylors–I guess we called it the tomboy look back when we were kids,” Selectism’s Jeff Carvalho said. “Today, the casualness of the tomboy style seems to have progressed into a style that, when considered, looks incredibly modern and relaxed.”

We have to agree with Carvalho that there’s just something so effortlessly cool about a girl rocking a menswear-inspired look–as long as she wears it with finesse. “For me, the casualness of menwear on women is about confidence. Wear what you like: be it a fitted cap, a five panel, or a fully buttoned-up shirt, how you wear it and hold it, is as attractive as the garment
itself.”

Keeping that in mind, there are a few standout menswear pieces you should steal now that will help you on your way to cool girl domination. And, if you really, really want to make the menswear thing happen for yourself you may also want to start using the words: mad ill, popping off, out here, dope, dude, bro, trill… because, yeah, menswear people talk crazy.

Karlie Kloss and Daria Strokous don’t lean that way

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion photo shoots / Fashion pictures

As androgyny and fashion are increasingly paired through the coming autumn / winter season you’ll see much of this: an interpretation of androgyny that leans towards the sapphic. Sapphism turns heads, but this season androgyny gives it a rather wide berth even if many a photographer will still lean towards it.

ADDING LENGTH TO SHORT HAIR

tutorial by Micha Brown, photos + graphic design: Kristin Ess

When it comes to super short hair, you often find yourself to be slightly limited with styling options. That’s why we thought it would be great to show you how to temporarily add a little length using extension wefts. This gives you a bit more versatility with your look. We’re pretty obsessed with Meagan Good’s short + sassy style. It’s really short in the back and gets longer toward the front. We’ve seen short hair on both Rihanna + Pink for years, but there’s something less edgy about this– it’s a very feminine, chic, flirty hairstyle. We’re so excited to show you how to play with length. Here we go!

  1. Start by blowing your hair into the desired shape if your hair is not relaxed. If your hair is relaxed, start by shaping it with setting lotion + setting strips. After the hair is completely dry, remove the setting strips.
  2. Use our FAVORITE TOOL for smoothing crazy curly roots! It’s called the “Root Control” tool, and if you haven’t heard of it, you should check it out! It’s just amazing. It’s like a hot comb for the root. Best. Thing. Ever.
  3. Create a clean part using a tail comb about 1″ behind your hair line. The part should mimic the hair line. (If you need visual help, jump down and peek at step #9!)
  4. Now get out your extension track. You don’t want to use clip-in extensions for this, you want to use THESE EXTENSIONS which are considered tracks/wefts. Measure the extension track like you see Micha doing in photo #4 and cut the piece to be the exact same length as the part.
  5. Apply a temporary bonding glue to the sewn part of the extension. If you’re confused on which bonding glue to get, ask the person you buy the extensions from. We like the Natty’s glue the best. Temporary extension glue lasts about 3-7 days depending on how fast your scalp gets oily. TIP: people have expressed that they’ve had a bad experience removing extension glue. I can assure you NOTHING removes this temporary extension bonding glue better than THIS. Spray it on, wait 3 minutes and peel the extension off with no problems. I’ve used it for years on many-a-model and have never had one problem. Most people try to soak them off with water. That doesn’t work!
  6. Lay the glue side down on your scalp and use the blowdryer on cool to set it. It takes about 20-30 seconds to adhere when using the blowdryer.
  7. Keep going!
  8. Keep going!
  9. You should lay 7-10 tracks down, one right behind the other (approx 1/2″ apart. Make your sections a teeny bit less wide as you move up toward the crown. (Use photo 9 as a guide if you need help!) Once you have all your tracks laid down, you’re ready for the fun part!
  10. We like to use this hair cutting razor to get a more textured haircut, but you can also use scissors or thinning shears if you know what you’re doing. If you look at Micha in photo #10 you see that she picks up little pieces at a time and slides the razor down. She’s also not going anywhere near her own hair. Please BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT YOUR OWN HAIR. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this part, don’t do it and ask someone who does. The whole point of this tutorial is to add length so you shouldn’t be cutting too close to your own hair anyway. Stay at least an inch away and you’ll have no worries.
  11. Once you’ve cut into the top, it’s time to add some texture to the back. Use a little curling iron for the best result. We used THIS ONE.
  12. Now add some curl to the front. Leave the ends out when you curl like Micha does in photo #12. Use a slightly larger size curling iron for this part. We used THIS ONE.
  13. Use a little more of your pomade for texture. Now you can rub it into the roots as well.
  14. Same thing for the front. Rub a little pomade into your hands and then through the front.
  15. Add shine or texture spray as desired. Here we’re using that beach spray we’ve been obsessed with. It gives beach-y texture but maintains the shine unlike some other beach sprays.
  16. Last but not least, always check the back using a hand mirror and make sure the shape is right.

Seriously makes me want to chop my hair off! And how gorgeous does Micha look with short hair!? If you have short hair + add some extensions for length, please remember to tweet us a photo @TBDOFFICIAL. We would love to see yours!!

Hey! If you know someone (and by someone I mean your boyfriend or friend) that is ‘Hot men of theBERRY’ worthy… get your hands on a pic of them and send it in!

Popping Up: Alex Clare

Get To Know The Brit Behind "Too Close"

Popping Up is our recurring look at new artists making noise on the music landscape. Because, hey - Madonna and Britney were once unknown, too.

You know Alex Clare‘s music, even if you don’t know you know it. His dramatic “Too Close” is the song from the flashy Internet Explorer ad that jolts you awake whenever your favorite show cuts to break.

Even from the small snippet, it’s clear that this Brit’s interpretation of dubstep is more melodic and poppy: His Major Lazer-produced 2011 debut album The Lateness Of The Hour favors soulful vocals rather than disfigured samples, and lurching bass instead of wobbling robot vomit. We’re not exactly sure how to categorize it - Soulstep? Electro-soul? Soft-step? - but we do know Clare has managed to humanize EDM using heart and hooks. And Clare’s got one edge on his knob-twisting DJ-producer brethren: Dude can SING. It all combines into that rare form of electronic music that you’d actually want to hear even when it’s stripped of the sweaty neon rave-up spectacle. For more on this dubstep anomaly, check out our interview with Alex Clare above, and read on.

FULL NAME: Alexander George Claire (notice the i)

AGE: 26

HOMETOWN: London

SOUNDS LIKE: At the risk of sounding absolutely ridiculous, we’re gonna say that Alex Clare sounds like Avicii channeled through Gavin DeGraw with a hint of Adam Levine (maybe that’s why his Wikipedia page once said he was a member of Maroon 5). When describing his own sound, Clare keeps coming back to the word “eclectic,” saying “It’s very diverse, obviously it has a very heavy leaning towards electronic music, like dubstep, dance or drum and bass elements. But I think my singing style is definitely that of a soul singer.”

INFLUENCES: “A lot of jazz, a lot of soul, a lot of blues…hip-hop, punk, drum and bass…I went through a lot of phases.” He told us he even had the pink hair to denote at least one of those phases. “I have a lot of musical heroes, and they all rub off in their own special way…The list would be as long as my arm, but everyone from Etta James to Stevie Wonder to Black Flag to Wu-Tang.”

But like any artist, his inspiration comes from sources other than vinyl as well. A self-described “shomer Shabbos Jew who keeps kosher,” Alex says that while his faith doesn’t directly influence his music, the state of mind “affects everything you do. It makes you think about things in a different way.”

UNDER COVER: Clare doesn’t take cover songs lightly. Previously he has covered Etta James and Prince, noting that “it took quite a lot of, ya know, getting the motivation and getting the focus to do those covers right, and getting the confidence to do it…If you’re gonna cover a Prince song, you have to be very brave or very stupid.” Because it’s a whole strenuous mental process, he doesn’t know which legend he’ll tackle next.

BIG BREAK: No gray area here, he arrived in March when that Internet Explorer 9 commercial featuring “Too Close” first hit, and everyone immediately fumbled to Shazam that beastly 30-second cut. But get this, Clare actually uses IE! “Uh, yes. Occasionally, I do. Sometimes.” Ringing endorsement!

IF THIS WHOLE MUSIC THING DOESN’T WORK OUT: “At 16, I went to chef school. My dad said ‘OK, play music, fine. But you should probably learn how to do at least one other thing.’ I got a formal qualification for how to fry an egg…I can make it look really nice, perfectly round. With an evenly cooked yolk.”

WHAT’S NEXT: “I’m writing [my next album] right now. I really want to put some more orchestral stuff on record…I’d really like that, but we’ll see. The Man might disagree, but hopefully he won’t…I wouldn’t be the first to [combine an orchestra with electronic elements], but when it works right it sounds awesome.”

What do you think of Alex Clare’s debut album? Tell us in the comments below, or on Twitter and Facebook.

Lil Wayne Reveals Fan-Made ‘Dedication 4′ Mixtape Cover

dedication4artwork

Lil Wayne‘s Dedication 4 mixtape might be pushed back a week, but at least we get a look at the album’s creative cover. Weezy fan Jesse Diebolt designed the artwork, which features a cartoon version of Wayne holding a skateboard. (Looks like even the animated version of the MC favors skateboarding over rapping.)

Dedication 4 was originally scheduled to drop August 15, but Wayne decided to hold off so that he wouldn’t steal any of the spotlight away from his homie 2 Chainz, who dropped his debut album this week (t0 less than stellar reviews). Not to mention the fact that Weezy’s mixtape isn’t even finished yet. "I ain't even gonna lie. I didn't even finish that motherfucker,” he admitted in an online video. “I've been skating and shit, falling and breaking shit, and all that type of shit. But I give it to you like next week.” Anyone else not exactly looking forward to a mixtape put out by a rapper who would rather be doing anything other than rapping?

Last Night’s Party: Prabal Gurung and His It Girl Muses Turn Out to Celebrate His New Collection For ICB

Dont let the mango-chili pops fool you! Despite the chill vibe that these snacks and other yummy food truck bites lent last night’s Prabal Gurung x ICB launch event, the target customer of this collaboration is anything but chill.

A quick scan of the crowd, full of tastemakers like Leandra Medine and Hannah Bronfman and editors like Vogue‘s Chioma Nadi and CR Book‘s Shiona Turni–already rocking the line–proved that this customer has some serious fashion chops.

But why leave it to guessing? For a concise take on who his latest collaboration is talking to, we reached out to the man of the hour himself, Prabal Gurung, who between hugs, kisses and introducing his new favorite band–The Tanlines–took a minute to break it down.

“She is a mixture of all my muses,” said Gurung. “A girl who is transitioning from getting to know herself to knowing herself.”

A room filled with those muses gave personality to a brand which, at least in this market, is a blank slate. While ICB remains a huge hit in the Asian market it is new in the states. Yet with this launch, available exclusuvely at Barneys, it’s poised to capture some of its hometown glory here.

Prabal’s collection for ICB is a melodic riff on his main line with soft fluid shapes, knee-grazing hemlines that manage to be flirty and ladylike simultaneously and chic fabrics you could come to live in. But if the pricepoints, resting between $250 and $650, seem too steep for the Prabal Gurung x ICB girl, then you have missed who she is according to Barneys Creative Director, Simon Doonan.

“Hello, you are at Barneys darling!” declared Doonan, who also added “The clothes are flamboyant and chic all at the same time. The girl who wears this is comfortable enough in her skin to own it.”

Hannah Bronfman, socialite and official ICB girl, who did triple duty as muse, hostess, and dj at the event, only had to think for a second before rattling off a laundry list of who her fellow fashionistas are:

“The ICB girl is a strong, sexy, confident girl,” explained Bronfman. “She cares about how she comes off to the world, but ultimately she likes to have fun!”

And they did. Click through to see all of NYC’s girls about town like Cory Kennedy, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Elettra Weidemann, Mia Moretti and more decked out in the new line, which is available at Barneys now.

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion photo shoots / Fashion pictures

Against a stormy backdrop and battling fierce winds, Du Juan stands in outfits of all white – making it all the more obvious just how suitable and stylish white can be for winter. Photographed by Benjamin Kanarek for the September 2012 issue of Vogue China, the shoot showcases the season’s range of textures and shapes that make the colour white desirable. Stylist Julie Ragolia mixes the pieces with accessories of the season: knee high boots in white leather, and lashings of metallic silver jewellery.
