As we reported earlier, Italian fashion editor and style icon Anna Piaggi died today at her home in Milan. She was 81.
Her contributions to fashion journalism cannot be downplayed–her “doppie pagine” (double page spreads, known as “DP”s) in Vogue Italia were legendary. Vogue Italia EIC Franca Sozzani tweeted, “23 years of working together, thousands of D.P. realised together. You will always be remembered Anna.” According to a 2004 profile in The Guardian, Piaggi produced 6,500 pages of editorial. “Her pages are the reason to read Vogue,” close friend Manolo Blahnik told the Guardian.
But it’s Piaggi’s style that truly set her apart. The blue hair that fell in a finger wave over one eye, the pink cheeks, bold lips and wildly eccentric clothes led to a 2006 exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum called “Fashion-ology” celebrating her vast and varied wardrobe. Susie Bubble, dare we say a possible sucessor to Piaggi’s legend, tweeted, “I never really had style heroines until I learnt about her at the V&A Fashion-ology exhibition.” When Piaggi met Karl Lagerfeld in 1974 he sketched her outfits for a decade, filling a book with drawings of her stand out looks. And just this year, she was one of the “fashion eccentrics” to have inspired Marc Jacobs fall collection.
The original advanced style icon, Advanced Style’s Ari Seth Cohen wrote in to tell us, “She was a legend and a huge inspiration on both my personal style and the way that I look at subjects…A true original.”
